I've always wanted to expand my photography tool belt to include drone work. Seeing how far the camera tech and form factors have come in a few short years has been really intriguing to try give it a whirl. After an initial toe dip with an older pre-owned DJI Phantom (that I killed after I crashed into a tree) I went all in with a DJI Mavic Pro that I snagged via a Prime Day deal. In some goofy tech stuff timing, DJI released a brand new version just 2 weeks later ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, classic.
After spending some time in some wide open spaces getting the feel for how piloting works I took to the streets of Atlanta (very carefully) and while it's a lot of fun from the moment of take off it does feel terrifying to zip such an expensive device around.
Credit where it's due, DJI has done an incredible job with the experience both hardware and software. The camera is nuts and even shoots RAW and 4K.
Notes: Always register your drones! It's super easy. Only takes a few minutes via the FAA website. While you are at it download the B4UFLY mobile app to check what restrictions are at your current location. Finally, just be careful! Spend time practicing in wide open spaces before attempting to navigate objects.
